The BLM needs our help to map our future fence removal projects!
BACKGROUND: Steens Mountain Wilderness contains the nation's first cow-free wilderness. Removing cows and ending grazing on this 100,000 acres of Steens Mountains has been key to the restoration of many of the headwaters and fragile desert meadows. Equally important, the removal of fences allows for wildlife such as sage grouse and antelope to migrate safely without getting caught in the wire. It also erases the remaining trace of humans, giving the wild back to wilderness.
TIMELINE:
June 23rd
We will all arrive at
the South Steens Campground in the evening. This will allow time for
some last minute orientation and to check through our backpacking gear.
June 24th
We will drive a short distance to the trailhead, where we will begin
the day-long hike out to our base camp on Ankle Creek.
June 25-26th
We will map fence these days in pairs of groups of 3, returning each afternoon to camp
June 27th
Hike back to cars and head home!
GROUP SIZE:
Space is limited to 10
participants due to Wilderness regulations.

A FULL
