Come and see how well the restoration work is going in Central Oregon's next great Wilderness!

BACKGROUND
This event will take place in the Deschutes Canyon Wilderness Study Area, which is a part of the Deschutes-Whychus proposed wilderness.

Whychus1The Wild and Scenic Deschutes River, which flows through the heart of the WSA, contains populations of bull trout (a threatened species under the Endangered Species Act), as well as kokanee and rainbow trout.  Whychus Creek, which joins the Deschutes River in the center of the proposed wilderness, was historically a key spawning ground for spring Chinook and contains healthy populations of redband and bull trout.

THE ROUTE
We will follow the Scout Camp loop trail from the trailhead in Crooked River Ranch on the east side of the Deschutes.  The trail is rated as "most difficult" by the BLM and is narrow and steep.  It is best suited to sure-footed individuals.

Winding its way down from the rimrock to the base of the Deschutes Canyon, the hike provides ample opportunity to view the geological history of the region: provided by a great cross section cutting through ancient stream-beds, countless flood basalt flows and pillow lava.  Native plants and wildflowers abound, and there are even signs of prehistoric occupation.

TIMELINE
We will meet at the trailhead at 9AM in an attempt to beat the heat, and enjoy the last of the morning light on the lava cliffs. After the walking through the restoration are and down to the river and back, it is great to enjoy your lunch on the rimrock edge overlooking the canyon.

WHAT TO BRING
Participants are responsible for bringing their own lunch in their day packs, and at least 2 quarts of drinking water.  Please dress appropriately for changing weather, and wear appropriate hiking footwear (no open shoes or sandals please).
