Dear Representative Walden,

I am writing to ask you to support designation of the Sutton Mountain, Pat's Cabin, Painted Hills, and Dead Dog Wilderness Wilderness Areas. I urge you to act quickly in this Congress to pass legislation to protect these special desert areas for future generations.

Oregonians overwhelmingly want to see our wild desert lands protected for future generations.  Wilderness designation for Sutton Mountain, Pat's Cabin, Painted Hills, and Dead Dog Wilderness will do just that, while also showcasing Oregon’s broad ecological diversity.

While almost half of Oregon is desert, only three high desert areas, Steens Mountain, Spring Basin, and Badlands are currently protected as Wilderness.  There are many special and fascinating desert areas in Oregon and protecting Sutton Mountain, Pat's Cabin, Painted Hills, and Dead Dog Wilderness is an integral step in creating a desert legacy for our children and grandchildren.  Our desert lands are also a great resource for world-class recreation, and are a prized retreat for many Oregonians who enjoy activities like hiking, fishing, hunting, bird watching, rafting and camping.

Oregon’s wildlands play an increasingly important role in the economic development of our state, especially in traditionally rural areas east of the Cascades.  Visitors come from thousands of miles away to hike, fish, raft and hunt in Oregon’s desert wilderness.  Beyond tourism, the rich quality of life and the diverse natural amenities that we enjoy as an Oregonians is key to attracting new businesses to Oregon.  By protecting Sutton Mountain, Pat's Cabin, Painted Hills, and Dead Dog Wilderness as Wilderness, we can secure this competitive advantage for generations to come.

I fully support the designation of Sutton Mountain, Pat's Cabin, Painted Hills, and Dead Dog Wilderness as Wilderness.  Each area offers unique characteristics that showcase the diversity of Oregon’s landscape. These areas provide unparalleled opportunities for solitude and recreation.

Future generations of Oregonians deserve the opportunity to experience our desert lands in all of their natural glory.  I encourage you to move quickly to secure permanent protection for Sutton Mountain, Pat's Cabin, Painted Hills, and Dead Dog Wilderness.
