Basin and Range

The Basin and Range region of Oregon is characterized by stranded high desert basins and isolated mountains. Many of which are fault block ranges.

This region includes our northern most true desert, The Alvord Desert on the east flank of the Steens Mountains. South of the Alvord Desert lies the Pueblo Mountains and Trout Creek Mountains.

To the west lies Hart Mountain and Warner Valley and the alkali lakes Summer Lake and Lake Abert. These include Abert Rim WSA and Diablo Rim WSA.

View an episode of Oregon Field Guide from 1993, featuring Lake Abert.
