Steens Mountain Wilderness Trail Work along Big Indian Gorge
July 10 @ 5:00 pm - July 15 @ 12:00 pm
Steens Mountain sets the stunning backdrop for this trail maintenance project in the glaciated landscape of Big Indian Gorge along the Oregon Desert Trail (ODT).
On this stewardship trip volunteers will use a variety of hand tools to clear brush from this overgrown section of trail, continuing the work volunteers completed in 2017 and 2018.
Because volunteers will be working within a wilderness area, the work will include cutting out down trees with handsaws and cutting back overgrown sagebrush and rabbitbrush from the trail corridor. No previous trail building experience is needed to attend this trip; ONDA will provide all instruction and necessary tools to do the job.
Trip highlights include spending time in the iconic beauty of the Steens Mountain Wilderness and working to maintain a popular section of trail along the ODT to improve conditions for hikers and horseback riders.
Challenges will be backpacking five miles into the work site, physically strenuous work at elevations between 5,000 – 7,000 feet, and potentially hot daytime temperatures.
