Cottonwood Canyon State BDA Install #1
May 9 @ 5:00 pm - May 12 @ 8:00 am
Protect Hay Creek from the impacts of climate change by restoring beaver habitat to this important steelhead stream.
Volunteer on this project and you will help install portions of 26 beaver dam analogues (BDAs) as part of ONDA’s four-year restoration project on Hay Creek.
The work will involve helping distribute materials and tools to each construction site, taking a turn on the hydraulic post pounder, photo documentation and assisting with measuring and surveying the construction. No experience or special equipment necessary, just a willingness to learn. Some tasks will be physically strenuous, but plenty of tasks are not, or can be accomplished at a pace appropriate to your specific abilities.
Trip highlights include a major feeling of accomplishment from doing work which will fundamentally improve three miles of creek and eventually insulate it from the impacts of climate change. Another perks is experiencing the lovely surroundings at Cottonwood Canyon State Park during a quiet part of the season. The relative closeness of the project area to Portland allows for day-trip access if desired. No experience required.
Challenges include navigating steep incised stream banks, potentially cold early spring camping temperatures and being patient with a work flow that can be highly variable.
