Cottonwood Canyon State BDA Install #2
August 8 @ 5:00 pm - August 11 @ 10:00 am
Our second of three trips building beaver dam analogues (BDAs) on Hay Creek at Cottonwood Canyon State Park.
This is definitely one of our “funnest” riparian restoration trips, and many helping hands are needed to accomplish the large amount of work we aspire to do.
Work opportunities vary greatly: a small amount of using a hydraulic pounder to install the final wooden posts, a lot of cutting and weaving willow, and many opportunities to escape the August heat by working directly in the creek.
Highlights include being an 8-year old kid again building structures in water and splashing around, then looking back to see a huge change in the stream where you have been working.
Challenges: Since the work involves some machinery, there will occasionally be some noise and exhaust, but there will also be the opportunity to work away from the noise on more laid-back aspects of the project such as willow harvesting and weaving. No experience required.
