Little Blitzen Gorge Trail Work
September 6, 2018 @ 12:00 pm - September 10, 2018 @ 12:00 pm

Steens Mountain sets the stunning backdrop for this trail maintenance project in the glaciated landscape of Little Blitzen Gorge along an Oregon Desert Trail (ODT) alternate route.
On this stewardship trip volunteers will use a variety of hand tools to maintain the Little Blitzen Trail, a gorge parallel to Big Indian Gorge.
Volunteers will use handsaws to cut back overgrown sagebrush and rabbitbrush from the trail corridor, and a variety of tools to maintain the trail tread. No previous trail building experience is needed to attend this trip; ONDA and the BLM will provide all instruction and necessary tools to do the job.
Trip highlights include spending time in the iconic beauty of the Steens Mountain Wilderness and working to maintain a section of trail along an ODT alternate route to improve conditions for hikers and horseback riders.
Challenges will be backpacking several miles into the work site, physically strenuous work at elevations between 5,000 – 6,000′, and hot daytime temperatures.
