Steens Mountain Wilderness Nye Trail Work
September 9 @ 3:00 pm - September 13 @ 12:00 pm
Steens Mountain sets the stunning backdrop for this trail maintenance project above the glaciated landscape of Little Blitzen Gorge along an Oregon Desert Trail (ODT) alternate route.
On this stewardship trip volunteers will use a variety of hand tools to clear brush and re-bench the tread from this overgrown section of trail, continuing the work volunteers completed in 2018.
Because volunteers will be working within a wilderness area, the work will include using handsaws and cutting back overgrown sagebrush and rabbitbrush from the trail corridor. No previous trail building experience is needed to attend this trip; ONDA will provide all instruction and the necessary tools to do the job.
Trip highlights include spending time in the iconic beauty of the Steens Mountain Wilderness and working to maintain a section of trail along an ODT alternate route to improve conditions for hikers and horseback riders.
Challenges will be backpacking several miles into the work site, physically strenuous work on a steep trail at elevations between 6,200 – 7,500 feet and wide temperature swings between night and day.
