Survival Strategies for Desert Species
April 9 @ 6:30 pm - 8:30 pmFree
The 2019 Bend High Desert Speaker Series wraps up on April 9 with a panel of experts discussing how high desert flora and fauna have adapted to survive in wetlands and other habitats in eastern Oregon. Hear from Ron Larson, Dennis Albert and Steve Sheehy as they discuss the unique life of the high desert, and the importance of conserving Oregon’s spectacular wild places so that these species can thrive, now and always.
Please note that space is limited and preregistration is required. These events fill quickly, and we will work throughout the month to ensure that as many people are able to attend as possible.
About the speakers
Ron Larson grew up on the Oregon coast, which inspired a lifelong passion for water. Ron completed a PhD in marine sciences and worked throughout the United States before moving to Oregon to study water development and endangered species in high desert lakes and wetlands. He has taken particular interest in studying and bringing attention to the ecology of the small ephemeral lakes that can be found in eastern Oregon.
Dennis Albert has dedicated much of his career to classifying and inventorying plant species as a means of advocating for the conservation of critical aquatic habitats. He has conducted research in multiple areas of the country, spearheaded efforts to better understand the flora of high desert wetlands and designed initiatives to support native plant species’ survival. Dennis currently shares his research and knowledge as a professor at Oregon State University.
Steve Sheehy has made headlines for his research on lichen east of the Cascades. Before Steve began studying high desert lichen species, the majority of lichenology research being conducted in Oregon was happening closer to the coast. Now, after many years of dedicated exploration and cataloging of species, he has greatly expanded our knowledge about these complex organisms, and how they survive in the high desert.
Doors open at 6:00 p.m. and the presentation begins at 6:30 p.m. The presentation will be held in Worthy Brewing’s Hop Mahal room, located in the far right corner of the main restaurant. You are welcome to have dinner and drinks in the restaurant prior to doors opening. This event is free and open to the public. Space is limited and pre-registration is required. Registration will be announced via Facebook and ONDA email in March.
