Keep the Owyhee Impeccable

Jamey Pyles

The U.S. Air Force has raced ahead with a controversial plan to intensify jet fighter training over Oregon’s high desert.
Senator Wyden has proposed an amendment (SA 5916) to the National Defense Authorization Act would require the military to study the effects of intensive noise on communities, fish and wildlife and wildlands, as well as the increased risk of wildfire from flares and impaired water quality from chaff released from the aircraft before finalizing their plan.
Comprehensive, scientific research of impacts would help ensure that the Air Force avoids and mitigates for the worst effects on people, natural resources and wilderness values.
More than 500 desert advocates have thanked Senator Wyden for his amendment and urged him to prioritize this safeguard for the Owyhee Canyonlands.

Far from Big Macs

There is a point in the Owyhee region, in northwestern Nevada, that is, at 115 miles away, as far away as you can get from a McDonalds in the U.S.

Restoration is hard slow work. It takes hold, or it doesn’t, in fits and starts. The immensity of the need can be discouraging, but we must carry on. I am so thankful ONDA carries on.
