Section 1: Badlands to Sand Spring (36.6 miles)
This section traverses the heart of one of the state's newest wilderness areas: the Oregon Badlands Wilderness. Marvel at Flat Iron Rock formation and Horse Ridge, and brush up on your astronomy at Pine Mountain.

Section 2: Sand Spring to Squaw Flat (16.3 miles)
Fill your canteens at Sand Spring and set out for high desert and big sky. This landscape is dotted with buttes and pine forest -- and keep an eye out for aspens.

Section 3: Squaw Flat to Lost Forest (27.7 miles)
Check out the lava fields at Lava Mountain and stop for a drink and some shade at Peter's Creek Campground. Then continue on to see where forest meets sand dune.

Section 4: Lost Forest to Burma Rim (18.5 miles)
With sand underfoot, look for Sand Rock, an interesting geological formation along your path. Hike along a ridge and head on toward Christmas Valley.

Section 5: Burma Rim to Diablo Peak North (27.5 miles)
Juniper gives way to sagebrush in this wide-open country. Watch for wild horses and expect increasingly surreal views as you ascend toward Diablo Peak.

Section 6: Diablo Peak North to Paisley (33.4 miles)
March on toward Diablo Peak and you'll be treated with views well worth the precarious rock scrambling. Follow the rim and descend into Paisley for a well-deserved ice cream cone.
