Policy and Progress in Oregon's High Desert
Policy and Progress in Oregon's High Desert
Dear desert advocates,
Many of us spend a lot of time thinking about the climate crisis and how we can support progress on this defining issue of our era. Your support for ONDA is a vital step in the right direction. From thoughtful engagement in renewable energy policy to protecting large landscapes, our collective action is making a difference.

Renewable Energy in Oregon's High Desert
Climate change is an overriding threat to the health and resilience of desert ecosystems, and ONDA recognizes that developing renewable energy resources is key to supporting Oregon’s high desert to adapt and thrive in this new reality.
In fact Oregon’s high desert could—and should—support renewable energy development, but only where it won’t affect wildlife, wildlands, cultural resources and other values.
Last month, ONDA engaged in a major effort that will decide where development might be appropriate on Oregon’s desert public lands.
Renewable energy development can be complex and controversial. Fortunately, ONDA has decades of technical experience in “smart from the start” renewable energy planning. Paired with our deep and abiding commitment to supporting the natural systems of Oregon’s high desert, we are well prepared to make the most of this important moment in federal policymaking.
Countdown on the Owyhee
Meanwhile, as we enter the final months of 2024, ONDA continues to press for permanent protection of more than 1 million acres of public land in southeastern Oregon’s stunning Owyhee Canyonlands. Our dynamic campaign has assembled Tribal representatives, elected leaders, businesses, organizations representing 22 million individuals, and 70,000 petition signers calling for immediate conservation action. The time is now.
The fate of the Owyhee Canyonlands now rests in Senator Wyden and Merkley's hands. Will they make good on their promise to protect the Owyhee before the end of the year? All eyes are on these leaders as we ask them to take the final steps needed to ensure Oregon’s Owyhee receives the protection it so richly deserves.

With conservation priorities in the balance, the end of 2024 promises to be eventful for Oregon’s high desert lands, waters and wildlife. Your support will continue to fuel our unwavering efforts to protect the Owyhee and address the climate crisis.
Thank you!
