Description
From the base of Hart Mountain you can access this beautiful canyon complete with wildflowers, wildlife and waterfalls. Various hiking options from an easy walk to difficult climb can be accessed from this point. The hike begins by entering a narrow slot canyon with a stream crossing about 50 yards upstream of the first small waterfall you encounter. The easy option, a 1.5 mile out and back hike, will take you to the base of a waterfall and provide a brief look at the canyon and its incredible contrast to much of the surrounding lands.
For an additional challenge (10 miles round-trip):
Almost 5 miles up the canyon, adventurous hikers can make it to DeGarmo Notch, a hanging valley with expansive views to the east. Some may want to hike all the way through to the Hot Springs Campground and soak away the sore muscles. Parts are a scramble with steep canyon walls, but waterfalls and flowers make this a worthwhile hike.
Notes and Advice:
- Keep an eye out for rattlesnakes along this trail during summer months.
- Potential for bighorn sheep sightings along the upper canyon rims!
Driving Directions
From Plush, take County Highway 3-12 (Hart Mountain Road) north toward the Hart Mountain Antelope Refuge for about 10 miles. Turn right (east) onto small dirt road just south of the DeGarmo Creek crossing. Follow the road for about 0.5 miles, keeping right at the 0.2 mile mark and left at the 0.3 mile mark until you reach a small parking area near DeGarmo Creek. If you do not have a high clearance vehicle, you can park along the highway and walk the extra 0.5 miles.
