McDermitt Creek Lithium Mine Site Visit
June 7 - June 10
Join ONDA to learn about the history and ecology of the McDermitt caldera, the McDermitt Creek watershed and environmental implications of the potential McDermitt Creek lithium mine.
A potential massive new mine near the Nevada border and just south of the Oregon Desert Trail would threaten to eliminate, fragment and degrade sagebrush habitat critical to the greater sage-grouse and streams inhabited by Lahontan cutthroat trout, in addition to a variety of other wildlife species.
This trip is an opportunity to learn more about the potential impacts of a lithium mine on healthy, intact habitat that supports important wildlife, recreational and cultural values, and to contribute to important field surveys to document the flora, fauna, geologic and other resources in the area. The group will also discuss related advocacy opportunities in what may become a multi-year engagement on this issue for ONDA and our community. This trip is designed for those volunteers wanting to take their public lands advocacy to the next level!
