Beatys and Mahogany Buttes

There is no developed trail to the top, so the hike begins when you have found a decent spot to park your vehicle. Beatys Butte at 7,885 above sea level and nearby Mahogany Butte at 7,140 are the most prominent points in the area, making for a challenging butte climbing day. The terrain is predominantly sagebrush, although there are a scattering of mahogany trees on the buttes in the area. Aside from the pronghorn antelope, the area is home to Greater sage-grouse, mule deer, and numerous bird species.

Notes and Advice:

• There are no trailhead amenities.
• These roads aren’t all visible on the Oregon Road and Recreation Atlas so more detailed maps are required such as the Adel BLM 100k map.
• It might be wise to get gas in Lakeview or up in Plush, the Adel gas station is closed.

From Lakeview, head north out of town for a few miles and take Highway 140 east. Twenty-six miles east of Adel, watch for the Beatys Butte Road (Road 6176 – sign saying “Spaulding Reservoir 19 mi”) that heads north/left as Highway 140 begins to climb to the south up what is called Doherty Slide. The road you turn on is dirt and in relatively good condition for the next 21 miles or so. A high clearance vehicle is needed from here on. Take a right onto the two-track Road 6196 (West Gulch Road). Drive up this road for approximately 5 miles until it opens up and intersects with other roads, creating a triangle. This spot is a good access point for both buttes, however they can both be summited from any direction.
