A Tribal Family History of the Wadatika’a Band of Northern Paiutes

The final event of Oregon Natural Desert Association’s High Desert Speaker Series features Dr. Diane Teeman, an archaeologist, scholar and tribal elder of the of the Wadatika’a Band of Northern Paiutes. Dr. Teeman will share the history and culture of her family and discuss her work as an anthropologist. She will also highlight the deep connection between cultural traditions and environmental conservation within the Tribe. Ryan Houston, ONDA’s executive director, will briefly highlight the current steps ONDA is taking to conserve Oregon’s high desert in partnership with local Tribes.

About the Presenters

Dr. Diane Teeman is the president of High Desert Heritage Consultants, LLC. She was formerly director of the Burns Paiute Tribe’s Culture & Heritage Department and a member of the Burns Paiute Tribal Council. She earned her Ph.D. in Anthropology at the University of Nevada, Reno, focusing on collaborative and decolonizing methodologies in archaeology. Teeman has spent nearly the past forty years working toward tribal culture and heritage protection and revitalization.

 

Ryan Houston, ONDA’s Executive Director, has led the organization since 2018, bringing over 20 years of conservation experience. He previously directed the Upper Deschutes Watershed Council, building award-winning restoration programs, fostering partnerships and leading research projects. Ryan holds an environmental science degree from UC Berkeley and a master’s in ecology from the University of Arizona. And, today, he and his family spend much of their free time exploring the desert streams and wide open landscapes of central and eastern Oregon.
