Small Splendors, Vast Landscapes
March 15 @ 5:30 pm - 7:00 pm
Continuing ONDA’s High Desert Speaker Series, Ellen Bishop will present “Small Splendors, Vast Landscapes.” Oregon’s deserts offer serene and yet provocative landscapes that invite contemplation. Yet sometimes, in viewing their sweeping vistas, we overlook the details that provide insight to their origins. These micro views of a macro landscape tell stories of epic floods, volcanic explosions, violent storms and more, as well as providing an entree to wildlife that we may overlook. Ellen’s image-rich talk is a guide to how we can read the details in these treasured landscapes that are precious to us all.
About the Speaker
As we become a more urban and technologically-driven society, Ellen Bishop thinks it is essential to reestablish our ties to place. She accomplishes this through both images and words, as well as interpretive work. With a Ph.D. in geology and specialization in terranes of the Northwest, it’s natural that Pacific Northwest landscapes are Ellen’s specialty. Her images are helping The Nature Conservancy, Western Rivers Conservancy, Grand Canyon Trust and other organizations achieve their conservation and public education goals. When not photographing wild landscapes, she focuses on writing. Her work includes the award-winning In Search of Ancient Oregon and Living With Thunder: The Past Present and Future of Pacific Northwest Geology.
