Steens Mountain Wilderness Rehab Project
October 3 - October 6
In partnership with the Bureau of Land Management’s Burns District, ONDA will lead several days of rehabilitation on Burnt Car Road in the Steens Mountain Wilderness.
The Steens Mountain Cooperative Management and Protection Act of 2000 established the Steens Mountain Wilderness Area, which restricted motorized use and road maintenance to specially designated routes. Burnt Car Road was illegally bladed in 2009. In a settlement with BLM following successful litigation, Burnt Car and other roads were required to be rehabilitated, reclaimed and/or closed.
This trip will work to rehabilitate the eastern end of the route, which ends at (but currently extends illegally into) the Wilderness Area and has experienced illegal off-road motorized use.
The work each day will involve lifting, bending, and other tasks that require a moderate level of physical exertion.
