Malheur NF Springs Fencing

June 13, 2022 @ 5:00 pm - June 16, 2022 @ 10:00 am

A volunteer working on riparian plantings

This project takes place in a biodiversity hot spot in the Blue Mountains that houses a diversity of groundwater-dependent ecosystems (springs, fens, peatlands, and wet meadows), bull trout spawning and rearing habitat, wetland sensitive plant sites, aspen stands, and a diversity of non-forested and forested upland habitats.

Volunteers will work with ONDA and Malheur National Forest staff to build fences around springs that have been degraded by livestock grazing. Fencing the springs will allow for water developments in the Headwaters Malheur River and Upper North Fork Malheur River watersheds to provide cool, clean water to wildlife and livestock while protecting sensitive resources in the surrounding area.

Trip highlights include learning about restorations effort within the Malheur River Basin from knowledgeable Forest Service staff and exploring a beautiful area with a rich history.

Challenges include potentially chilly spring weather.
